Catherine A. LaRoche
Artist Statement I have loved letterforms and lettering since I was a young child. I do traditional and contemporary calligraphy, illumination, watercolor, mixed media, and collage. I work with bottled and stick inks, watercolor, gouache, acrylic, 23k shell gold, gold leaf, and a variety of papers, pens, and brushes.Biography Cathy has been a calligrapher for more than 30 years. She studied for many years with her grandfather, J. Arthur LaRoche, who was a professional calligrapher and from whom she learned a number of calligraphic hands and the art of illumination. Cathy has studied with several world-renowned calligraphers, and has taught at the Sharon Arts Center. Her work has been exhibited in one-woman, group, faculty, and juried shows. She is a member of the Friends of Calligraphy (San Francisco), the Washington (DC) Calligraphers Guild, Masscribes, IAMPETH (International Association of Master Penman, Engrossers, and Teachers of Handwriting), and Cyberscribes.
